Our History

The Pinedale Public Utility District (PPUD) is a political subdivision of the State of California.  PPUD was formed in August 1950 under the Municipal Utility District Act of 1921 for the specific purpose of providing wastewater collection and treatment to unincorporated subdivisions west of the historic unincorporated community of the city of Pinedale, California. In 1951, the California Legislature adopted the Public Utilities Code, which incorporated a substantial number of previous general-purpose enabling acts into a unified code under State law. Therefore, PPUD's operations are governed by the Public Utility District Act of 1953, Public Utilities Code sec. 15501 et seq.

Shortly after 1960, the PPUD's scope of authorized services included wastewater collection. Street lighting, landscape maintenance and street sweeping are only provided in certain unincorporated areas within the District.  On July 6, 1972, PPUD entered into a contract with the City of Fresno for the treatment of waste, at which time PPUD continued to provide services for only the transfer of waste.

PPUD is governed by a three-member board of directors. It is an "independent special district", meaning it functions independently from and is not governed by another legislative body such as the County or the City.
